Named after the Italian publishers of the first issues of Haydn\, Mozart and Beethoven quartets\, Artaria’s refined and thoughtful playing has brought them critical acclaim in Europe and throughout the United States. The Boston Globe describes Artaria as “exquisitely balanced and sonorous” and that “their musical understanding was first-rate”. \nFormed in Boston\, Artaria was mentored by members of the Budapest\, La Salle\, Kolisch\, Juilliard\, and Cleveland Quartets\, serving as artists-in-residence at Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute\, performing at Festival de L’Epau in France\, and at the final rounds of the 1992 Banff International String Quartet Competition. They have been featured live on national television\, the CBC\, NPR\, MPR\, and WGBH public radio and at prestigious chamber music venues including the New School Series in New York City\, Dame Myra Hess in Chicago\, Jacobs Pillow in Philadelphia\, Library of Congress in Washington D.C.\, and the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. In 2001\, Artaria became Minnesota’s quartet-in-residence\, winning the prestigious McKnight Fellowship for performing musicians\, serving as MPR’s artists-in-residence\, and being featured as Minnesota originals on Twin Cities Public Television MN-Original series. The quartet’s performances are recorded on Centaur Records and Aequebis Recordings. \nRecipients of the inaugural Rural Residency Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts which took them to Tifton\, GA for nine months\, Artaria has been awarded multi-year residency grants from Chamber Music America\, Midori’s Partners in Performance\, the Heartland Fund\, and the Minnesota State Arts Board for their initiatives in underserved communities. Artaria inspires audiences and individuals through chamber music performances and education\, mentors students as they express themselves in a multifaceted artistic landscape and gives voice to important compositions of all past and living composers. \nThe members of Artaria are widely recognized for their passionate teaching style and dedication to their students. They are founders and directors of the Artaria Chamber Music School in Saint Paul\, MN a year-round chamber music coaching program for young string players\, the Stringwood Chamber Music Festival at the Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center for two weeks each August\, and the Adult Retreat every last weekend in September. The Esme Quartet is currently the ensemble in residence at San Francisco Performances and on the faculty of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Formed in 2016 in Cologne\, Germany\, by four Korean musicians and lifelong friends\, the quartet is driven by a deep artistic connection and a shared passion for music and the arts.  \nThe ensemble garnered international acclaim after winning First Prize and four special awards at the 2018 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition in London. That same year\, they were named HSBC Laureates of the Académie du Festival d’Aix. Additional honors include top prizes at the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition\, the Possehl Musikpreis Lübeck\, and the inaugural Hans Gál Prize by the Academy of Sciences and Literature Mainz and Villa Musica Germany.  \nThe Esmé Quartet has performed at major venues and festivals across Europe\, North America\, and Asia\, including the Lucerne Festival\, Wigmore Hall\, Opéra de Lille\, L’Auditori Barcelona\, Hong Kong Arts Festival\, and the Aix-en-Provence Festival. They were the first Artists-in-Residence at Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul for the 2020–2021 season and have appeared in residencies at the McGill International String Quartet Academy\, Classic Esterházy\, and the Heidelberg String Quartet Festival.  \nIn recent seasons\, the quartet made acclaimed debut tours of North America\, Japan\, and Australia. Highlights include performances of John Adams’ Absolute Jest with the Hong Kong Philharmonic\, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra (with John Adams conducting)\, and Gyeonggi Philharmonic. Their collaborations also include a multimedia project\, ‘The book of water’ by Michel van der Aa and British actor Samuel West at the Hong Kong Arts Festival\, and a North American tour with Van Cliburn Gold Medalist Yekwon Sunwoo.  \nSince 2025\, the Esmé Quartet is based in San Francisco as ensemble-in-residence with San Francisco Performances. In the first season\, they presented a Schubert quartet cycle in collaboration with musicologist and host Robert Greenberg. The 2025-26 season featured a highly praised New York debut at The Frick Collection\, continued tours across North America and Europe\, and culminated in a special 10th anniversary celebration concert at the Seoul Arts Center.  \nThe quartet’s discography on Alpha Classics includes To Be Loved (2020)\, named one of the best classical albums of the year by WQXR as well as five stars review by Diapason\, Yessori: Sound from the Past (2023)\, and a 2024 Apple Music Classical Sessions EP of Mendelssohn’s Op. 13. A third album\, Nui\, featuring music by Fanny\, Felix Mendelssohn and a new commission by Juri Seo\, will be released in September 2026.  \nBelgian-American violist Dimitri Murrath joined the ensemble in 2023\, succeeding founding member Jiwon Kim.
